Title: Weekend dive Post by: JD on April 08, 2010, 10:44:22 AM After the weekend dive on the Lumb and Seawolf, I had a thought. I have an old BCF fire extinguisher here at work, from god knows where. I am thinking about taking it on a dive and setting it off underwater and seeing how far (if at all) it propells me underwater. Might make a mess to the vis (I have NFI what is actually in a BCF extinguisher, is it just gas?), things may well go wrong in a big way or it may just be a giant fizzer (Ha ha!) and nothing happens.
Anyway, I am keen to see what happens, as I am sure you all are too. Tickets will be on sale through the FUJAK Box Office shortly. I believe it's a gas under pressure that comes out as a liquid which evaporates off without leaving any residue. I used to use Freon for cleaning electronic parts as it is not electrically conductive & 'clean'.
Problem is it blows holes in the ozone layer so is banned. Just like the little cans of Freon R12 I used to use to regas my own car a/c system. So, as it relies on being under pressure, no idea what pressure, I'd expect that its effectiveness for propulsion would depend on the pressure differential between the extingusher & that of the water in which it was discharged. Best do it in the shallows or even better write to Mythbusters & get them to do it. I figure the deeper we go, the greater the surrounding water pressure is, therefore the difference between the pressurised gas inside the cylinder and the surrounding water is less, resulting in less of an effect. Then again, is the deeper water slightly more dense, creating a harder 'wall' which the gas has to push through, thereby creating more thrust..... FIIK. Where is Ian when you need him?

Was a tough choice to make though ;D ;D Will post some pics on return. Title: Re: Weekend dive Post by: rob b on April 11, 2010, 01:54:20 PM well whats the goss on Ian.
