Has anyone ever run a car motor at full revs while car is stationary till motor blows and if so what happened? Old holden 6 (173 if I remember correctly). Firstly, we ran it for about 10 minutes at full revs to see if it would blow. Nope, so we drained the water, and ran it for another 10 mins. It seized solid. Left it for about an hour, and it started! In true Mythbusters form (although this was about 15 years ago, so well before Adam and Jamie) we drained all the oil out of it, and put 1L back in. Went 'BANG............rattle rattle rattle..............BANG' after about 30 minutes. Lasted longer than we thought. Old holden sixes- Cant kill 'em! We pulled it apart and it had 2 broken pistons (the rest were very scored from the nip up) and a cracked crank.

The one we blew up was in average condition, but still held in there for ages with 1L of oil and no water. I think after it seized the first time it went a bit 'loose', so it ran longer next time. Good engine? Who knows, but a long time.
You need a failure point, ie a stuffed bearing ready to let go, or a dud piston. We introduced 2 failure points, and it still went for ages. If I remember correctly, it ran out of petrol the last time we ran it. Thinking about it, maybe it wasnt 30 mins, more like 15 (it was along time ago) I can probably organise an engine to blow up if anyone is interested! Just reverse the accelerator spring. Start it up, from idle to 6000rpm in .34 seconds! JD Title: Re: Blowing up motors Post by: acky on August 17, 2008, 12:25:59 PM me and some old mates had a crack at trying to destroy a Humber super snipe (era 1960's ish) we rolled it (i scored 3 barrell rolls accidently down the side of a hill! lucky only scored mild concussion haha) thrashed it some more and at the end of the day drained all that we could (it had already suffered a cracked sump and radiator!) and continued to thrash it....... never could kill it - we ended up burying it in the farm dump under a couple of large bucket loads of dirt, 6mths later after a few beers we decided to drag it out with the tractor and it actually ended up running and surviving another days thrashing i think in the end we gave up and its still sitting in the same paddock we left it as the fuel tank was so knackered it wouldn't hold fuel
