Anyone dived here? Divers service has a trip running Mick wants me to go on, and am just wondering who has been and what it's like.
Seem to be centred around the The Place Portofino resort (although I suspect a typo from MQ, I think it's supposed to be Palace not place). This seems to be in or near PUERTO GALERA.

JD

I did find this quite interesting on a website about a dive site: Maximum depth 69m. Skill level: Advanced and technical. Advanced diver to 70m? I wonder what the OW depth limit is!

Does  "invited" mean

A) As part of an extremely important research/exploration expedition, as a valued team member, all costs provided for.

or

B) As a full paying customer, desperately needed to make up the numbers for the splash & dash to go ahead.

If Rick is lucky, he might let him plug in his pee valve and have a snorkel while he is on deco.

Anyone care to add something constructive that may even remotely answer my original question?

Hi JD,

I dived there about 5 years ago. Great spot, well worth the diving. In the channel there certainly are some deep and challenging dives, but our group dived to recreational levels. One of the deepest open water dives was achieved in this area.

Portofino is a very nice spot, cheap, great food and beer, great night life. More importantly, good dive operations with good practices, good gear, clean air and excellent knowledge of their sites. Good wrecks only 10 minutes from the bay. There are some mean currents which are good for drift dives but not so good if you head into the wrong spots - believe the locals about this. From memory we visited coral reefs, some fairly benign sea caves, several wrecks, great walls (with 40m vis), as well as some washing machine like drift dives. Usual package is for 10 dives over 5 days, but you can buy more (we did 14 including 2 night dives). Nitrox was available.

Hope this helps.

Very much so. Mick Q is going over with his missus and taking a group which he has invited me to go on with the missus and kid. Sounds like it might be worth a look, even if I leave the breather at home and just dive OC.

Thanks for the info.

Jarrod,

We went there on our honeymoon, but to a different part that MQ's going. We did Coron bay, heaps of wrecks, and good viz, think you saw some of the pics. Food is great and the local rum is AU$1.70 a bottle in the stores, tastes good too. In fact if you go you better bring us a bottle back?

Brad, I knew you guys went, but I also knew it was a different spot, hence no phone call...
Looks like this may be on. Mick has organised flights back into Brisvegas where we have a wedding on that weekend, so it all looks good. Might not take bernals though, will have to see.
