As some of you know, I did a trip across the Nullarbor last week towing a 3.5T 26' boat to deliver it to its new owner in Green Head (about 350km north of Perth, just south of Geraldton)
Left Gepps Cross at about 5.30am Monday after discovering the trailer brakes were not working. Drove straight through to Eucla after many fuel stops for dinner at 7.30pm. All good so far, getting around 32L/100km in excellent conditions. 1200km in 14 hours at between 90-100k/hr.
Left Eucla at around 7am. After the first fuel stop the speedo stopped working, which in turn wouldnt allow the transmission into overdrive (the vehicle will only go into 5th if the speed is above a certain speed, as it didnt know what the speed was, it wouldnt go in), so we timed the 5km stretches in between signs to get a speed. At the next fuel stop I had a quick look underneath to check if everything was OK, but next stop I found a fuse box I had missed and a blown fuse. We were getting 45L/100km with a dodgy speedo, and had a near miss coming into Caiguna. We were on the sub tank after switching over from the main when the light came on, and were headed uphill when it started to cough and splutter. We switched back to main tank and dropped back to around 60-70km/hr (we had no speedo though) and coasted into the service station. We had 4L in the main!
Stopped the night in Merridin, again another 1200km day, leaving us 300km short of Perth.
Drove into the outskirts of perth, filled up (yet again) and headed north to meet the others at Cataby. An hour north again, and we were in Green Head about 2pm, just in time for beer O'Clock Wednesday.
Took the boat out for a spin Thursday in very rough conditions, crayfish tails, oyster shooters and roast pork for dinner. Very nice indeed.
Headed off at 5.30am Friday, with the centre diff lock of the cruiser still engaged. Made turning tight corners difficult, but all OK. 18L/100km was incredible!
We stopped off in Kalgoorlie to check out the Stratco store there and get the Cruiser looked at. After a few beers at 'Skimpy's' we picked the car up, and headed east. Stayed the night at Norseman.
Weather had completely turned to shit and we were nearly getting blown off the road. We were going to make a break for Adelaide, but with the weather decided to stay at Ceduna instead. Headed off at around 8.30am and got into Adelaide at 2.30pm.
Monday am to Sunday arvo we covered 6400km with a day and a half off in Green head. Looking forward to the quick drive down the mount!

JD,

Interesting trip by the sounds of it. Lucky you didn't have PH with you, without his computer he wouldn't know how to work this out. Too much maths involved for him surely !

Good point Ian!
I was in charge of the distance calculations too, but I make the numbers work for me. We had 140L on board, but with us doing 30-35L/100km it was an easy calculation. A disturbing one at 400km per tank, but easy!
I should have known we were in trouble when we got less than 200km out of 80L.......

" After the first fuel stop the speedo stopped working "

The infallible computer died RN !

Any more info on the beers at Skimpy's ? I'm assuming the pub isn't named after a cult australian classic TV animal with a fetish for wearing G strings.

I'm sure it'd take thousands of dollars in additional courses before one was suitably qualified to work it out on the fly especially with all that repetitive driving.

JD, any truth to the rumour that you had to keep the jerry can (used to extend your range of course) on the left side of the driver at all times?

Or did you go 98RON to the right & 95RON to the left?

Yes Rick, the computer failed and we had to resort to on the fly calculations (well, on the drive calculations realy!)
Luckily, the boat was wearing twins, and we had twin tanks, so no additional gas was required!
As far as Skimpy's goes, what goes on tour stays on tour......

Now Harvs, most people when I told them I was going to Green Head made the drug connection. You are the first to make the sexual one. More to that than meets the eye?
