Hi
I'm going to Lake Eyre in July to see it in flood. I wonder if I should take the dive gear. How many of you guys have Lake Eyre in you log book? There must be at least one deep part as the lowest point is near Halligan Bay; -15m.
Any advice appreciated.

No advice apart from wash your gear afterwards! Would be a novel entry in the log book, for sure! I would take gear if I was going, why not? Might be a swim to find something deep, but the boaties should know. There is a sailing club which sails in floods, maybe try and contact them?

Well thanks for all the info. But I did find out from more helpful sources:
1. The track from william creek to Halligan bay is marginal at the moment and needs a real 4wd not just my play one.
2. There is water in the lake but it's only shallow in most of this part.
3. If I can get the car in, it's still about 2 km walk to water and about 15km before it gets more than shin deep and about 30 km to the lowest point in Australia before I can dive.
4. There is no chance of jumping on a boat because boating is not allowed on the lake at the moment due in part to a native title claim but more because bogans try to run outboards in 6 inches of water and then get stuck.
In conclusion, stupid idea that's not going to happen. Now, on fujak of all places, why didn't someone tell me this earlier?
Nonetheless, I'll enjoy the trip...

Lake Eyre was great, a huge expanse, much bigger than I thought. But shallow. While the lowest point in Australia is in ABC Bay at -15m, the max depth is 2m and most is less than 0.5m. We stood at the edge of Lake Eyre South and the birds 100m out were only in 1cm of water. And so salty; the shore had plenty of dead fish from the salt. From the air, the water viz looked like mud. While there was a yacht regatta in progress I don't think it will become a dive site soon...
